PONMUDIKUNNU DAM

The Ponmudi Dam is a concrete gravity dam built across the Panniyar river which is a tributary of Periyar river at Konnathady panchayath of Konnathadi village in Idukki district of Kerala, India. The dam was constructed in 1963 as a part of a hydroelectric project. Construction was led by E.U.Philipose, Superintending Engineer, Kerala State Electricity Board. It has a length of 288.80 metres (947.5 ft). The hydropower component of the dam has an installed capacity of 30 MW with firm power of 17 MW, generating 158 GWh annually. Taluks through which the river flow are Udumbanchola, Devikulam, Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha, Kunnathunadu, Aluva, Kodungalloor and Paravur.

KALLIMALI VIEW POINT

Watching the remarkable Kallimali viewpoint is perhaps one of the greatest spectacular experiences at Munnar. If you are preparing a trip to Munnar, never miss the Kallimali, as it will offer you splendid distant views of the Ponmudi Reservoir, as well as the island in it, and its catchment areas, dense with forest. After every journey to Idukki, a tourist may feel that the place is much more handsome than before. Moreover, one can discover newer fascinations on each occasion. The breathtaking Kallimali viewpoint is one among such emerging explorer destinations and resembles Kalvari mount in the catchment area of the Idukki dam.

RIPPLE WATERFALLS

Ripple Waterfalls is a beautiful waterfall in Munnar, situated at Sreenarayanapuram in Idukki district of Kerala. Located at a distance of 19 km from Munnar Bus Station, It is one of the magnificent waterfalls in the Idukki. The waterfall is formed over the Muthirappuzhayar River. Maintained by the forest department, it is an idyllic spot to spend some time amidst untouched beauty of nature. KTDC has made fences and footpaths near the waterfall. There is a pavilion to view the distant beauty of the area.

PLANE PARA

The place is picturesque. The “Plane rock” in Rajakumari, Idukki, is wild, windy and beautiful. It’s sad that the spot is yet to find a mark on the state’s tourism map, all for want of genuine interest to provide easy accessibility to the place where a natural rock formation gives it the look of a runway on which sits perched two rocks which look like planes. Hence the name “Plane Para”. A few deft marketing moves would surely bring in the much-needed revenue for further development. Except for the locals, the place is still out of bounds for Turists and trekkers out to uncover the beauty of Idukki

KUTHUMKAL WATERFALLS

At a distance of 24 Kms from Munnar and 36 Kms from Idukki, Kuthumkal Waterfalls is charming waterfall located in Kuthumkal near Rajakkad (4 Kms) in Idukki District. This cascading waterfall is a good picnic spot to enjoy the nature and play with the waters of the falls. The falls are very close to the main road and accessible by easy trek. It is possible to get into the waters at bottom of these falls. Rajakkad is connected by bus with Munnar & Adimali (24 Kms). The falls are 4 Kms from Rajakkad and can be reached by Auto/Bus.Kuthumkal water falls is located 21 kms from Munnar.

GAP ROAD

A journey to Idukki is often incredible with the nature charming with its amazing sceneries. The New Cheruthoni Bridge awaits us on the trip through the Thodupuzha-Kattappana route. Next to it stands the Old Cheruthoni Bridge, which brings a deluge of memories, staying as the symbol of strength and survival. As you cross the bridge travel further and get past Kattappana to reach Munnar, there is a new way where the road itself becomes part of a grand frame. That is the Gap Road. Once the work on the Munnar-Bodimettu road is completed soon, the Gap Road is sure to become the favourite route of tourists and travellers.

ANAYIRANGAL DAM

Anayirangal Dam is an earthen dam built on the Panniyar river in Chinnakanal and Santhanpara panchayats, 22 km The dam is surrounded on one side by forest and on the other by Tata Tea Plantation. The dam is located near the Munnar – Kumily road. The water flowing from the dam reaches Kuthungal and Ponmudi dams through the Panniyar river. Power is generated at Kuthungal and Panniyar powerhouses. The dam stores water from small streams flowing from Bealram and rainwater flowing from the hills on the Tamil Nadu border.

CHINNAKANAL WATERFALLS

The Chinnakanal or Powerhouse waterfall is located a few kilometers from The Siena Village. Surrounded by lush high mountains, the river Devikulam is the source of this stunning waterfall. Chinnakanal waterfalls are remarkable as it spreads over an area of 67.33 km2 (26.00 sq mi) with 3,210 families residing in them. The surrounding lush plantations give the waterfalls a classic appearance. You can snap photographs, relax, or can simply sit back and enjoy the fall as much as you like, nobody is going to snap you back from the trance!

DEVI KULAM

Devikulam is a wonderful picnic spot located 8 kilometres away from Munnar. Its velvet lawns and vast range of exotic flora and fauna have made it a must visit spot for all who are in the vicinity. The nearby Sita Devi Lake is frequented by visitors throughout the year. Its pristine waters and picturesque surroundings make it a beautiful location to unwind. This area is also perfect for trout fishing.

PERIYAKANAL TEA FACTORY

The village of Periyakanal is situated about 20 km from Munnar on the road towards Thekkady. The Periyakanal Tea Factory is one of the oldest in the Munnar region.

KUNDALA LAKE

About 20 km from Munnar, Kundala Dam is a picturesque tourist spot. The dam is built on River Periyar, and it is surrounded by the green Western Ghats mountain range. The area also has Cherry Blossom trees, which flower twice a year, adding to the beauty of the place. And if you’re lucky, you can even witness the vivid purple cover of Neela Kurunji flowers on the hills. Those flowers bloom only once in 12 years.

ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK

Eravikulam National Park is a 97 km² national park located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki and Ernakulam districts of Kerala in India. The park is situated between 10º05’N and 10º20′ north, and 77º0′ and 77º10′ east and is the first national park in Kerala. It was established in 1978.
